Copy Cat

I am not sure if this is legal. Or if the Copy Cat Police will hunt me down, but here goes.

Is anyone ever inspired to "copy" RTW clothing?

Two years ago D1 and I were amazed at the $400 price tag on this gorgeous cascade tulle skirt at J. Frew. Can you read my code? I will refer to this retailer in spy language throughout this post......

So I examined the pictures carefully in the catalogue, and designed the skirt as closely as possible. It was putsy and D1 still says it is one of her favorites. Here she is wearing it. It is similar-do you think?

Along comes another $400 J. Frew skirt and Yoshimi the Flying Squirrel sends me her leftover pink/gray furry fabric in exchange for a May BWOF. I know the name of the magazine has changed, but I am having a hard time readjusting. This fabric was PERFECT for this copy cat exercise. THANK YOU Yoshimi!!!!

So here is the end result. Lined, elastic waist, two easy sides to sew. Thank you to my friend Karen who picked up this lovely metallic silver elastic in NYC. All we could find here was white underwear elastic.....she saved the skirt.

Does anyone else Copy Cat????

  1. Tessutis in Sydney are selling that white ruffle fabric - not cheap $100 a metre! My daughter is after a similar sassy little skirt.

  2. What a fantastic job on both. They look awesome.

  3. Love both! I try to copycat, and sometimes obsess about designs too much. Drives me crazy trying to figure out how I'm going to put some designs together.

  4. Yaaa! sometimes we just don't need to reinvent the wheel! Great job, the skirts are adorable and you saved $ they'll need for college. That's what F21 does they copy everything!!!! That's why they're so cheap and get sued so often.

  5. Joanne, I am going to have to stop reading your blog if you insist on being so cryptic all the time, writing in code and all. Sheesh. ;) Both skirts turned out great, and I think copying for one's own enjoyment is A-OK (not to mention sometimes like solving a really challenging puzzle)!

  11. Of course I copy rtw! Who wants to pay those prices when we can do it better and cheaper. Great skirts. Your dd certainly has the figure for them.

  12. Yeah all the time! If I didn't knock off RTW I would never have anything to wear in my size! ROTFLOL! And the technical term is "knock off" designers knock off other designers all the time!

Now those are two amazing skirts that you made for your DD! She must be thrilled with you.

  13. Both skirts look great! Your daughter makes a beautiful model. Why not nock off RTW? They are knocking each other and the higher end designer off all the time anyway!

  14. Of course! And there are no issues for own use surely :) Really cute skirts.

  21. Hi Joanne,
I just wanted to let you know that the fabric I was looking for is making its way to me now :) Angela from RiAnge blog found the fabric at her local Joann's and purchased it for me.
It was very nice of you to offer to get it for me and I appreciate your kindness. Thank You. Ann

  22. Cute skirts, your dd is lucky. And yes, I do copy too, sometimes a complete garment, sometimes certain details. For your own use no problem at all I think.

  23. You did a great job on both skirts. I'm a fellow copy cat and love it. Recently I copied a ready to wear J. Frew dress for a bridesmaid - worked beautifully and the wearer was delighted. Here are the links:
