HELP WITH A PATTERN

Dear Readers,

My 16 1/2 year old son has asked if I would make him a pea coat for the winter. This is miraculous on many levels, mainly two as of right now.

1. He gave me some lead time of several months
2. He never asks me to sew anything for him, other than the muslin toga I wrapped and pinned around his torso for Halloween last year. Hardly a sewing feat.

Yesterday I thought I would start the search for a pattern. Is anyone out there astounded at the lack of men's patterns? More specifically a traditional pea coat? Have I had my head in the sand with respect to men's sewing patterns???

If anyone can recommend a pattern, or is willing to send me a pattern, I would trace it, guard it with my life and return it asap.
If anyone has any suggestions I would gladly listen. My BWOF collection only starts December 2008, so I am wondering if I have missed anything prior to this.

While I am more than happy to purchase an American Eagle Outfitters pea coat for my son, I feel that this request should be honored and that as his mother, I know he would truly appreciate this project and its process. The toga project passed as a sewing project last October, but he has figured it out by now.....

Thank you All.

  1. I was going to suggest the Oliver and S pattern, but some how read 6, not 16! This book has been talked about on PR, but it is pricy

You would think that something as basic as a peacoat would be a simple pattern to find. I couldn't find any either! Good luck!

This is a stunning book of men's coats but in Japanese. However, you are more than up to the challenge. Unfortunately, I'm in Australia but you are sure to find someone in the US with a copy if you don't want to buy it.

  3. Also Burda 8022 - don't faint or show your son, but you could easily reshape a muslin from this very lean women's pea-coat :)

  7. I would suggest eBay or some of the vintage pattern sites. Since you have time and can look I bet you can come up with one that way. At one time the pattern companies did release alot more men's patterns because women sewed for their entire families. It's just in the last few years that they have moved away from that.

  8. A) I love that Cynthia Rowley dress! So you!

    B) I am very impressed your son asked you to sew for him. That's monumental, actually. Speaking of sons, mine turns 15 tomorrow!

  9. I remember one from one of PR's sewing contest. A mom made a pea coat for her son. I am not sure which contest now.

  10. The Burda magazine from Aug 2009 has a men's coat(133) that isn't a pea coat technically, but is in that style family. There is also has a women's pea coat pattern (102) in the same issue if that helps.

  12. How nice that he wants you to sew for him :)
I agree it is very hard to find mens patterns and a pea-coat might be somewhat difficult.

I found one on Burda style.de but could not find the same pattern on the US site.
ebay or a Vintage pattern site may be the way to go. I hope you find one.

  13. Why not take Simplicity 5386. It is for a Matrix-esque style coat that could be altered to make a great pea coat. Simplicity 4083 would work as well.

Good luck! I can't wait to see what you end up with!

  14. I love pea coats and I love to make my own fashion designs. And I love to start with men's overcoats.
