Thank you and a Pea Coat

Thank you for all your wonderful comments on the lace dress. It was a labor of love and I appreciate your visits.

                                                              Finally.
                                              Nick's pea coat. BWOF 10/2006/129.
Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a men's pea coat pattern?
                                                       They don't exist.

I tracked this pattern down through Crisford on Pattern review. This wonderful woman answered my questions through our Flickr account, sent me the pattern, I traced it, sent it back and when I had some questions she obliged with grace. Please look at her review, I followed it verbatim and I was not disappointed. Thank you Crisford!

I used a 100% black felted wool coating from my stash. I cut a muslin and made some changes. This coat is a tad big. S2 is not yet 17 and I want this to last. He also tried it on with a tank underneath-hence no layers. It will be worn with layers.

I top stitched the seams and found great patchwork buttons at Hancocks.
The pockets are a must.
I stitched the underarm lining to the sleeve to prevent any rips when putting the jacket on in a hurry.
-a tip from Crisford.

The lining is an Italian cotton windowpane shirting in baby blue.
It passed the "manly" test.
He gave me the green light to use baby blue.

Next weekend we drive to visit S1 in college, I will show him the pictures of his younger brother's jacket and maybe...............this will not be my last pea coat.........

  3. It looks fantastic! How nice to be able to make something for grown sons. With girls there are prom dresses, etc. but not many opportunities with the boys. It's a classic coat that I am sure he will keep for many years.

  9. Sharp coat! Does the lining have a smooth, sateeny finish? Trying to pick lining fabric for a new wool coat for my son, and I know the cotton flannel I lined his last coat in didn't make getting into and out of the coat easy when he wore longsleeve t-shirts. Would love to know your feedback on that one. Thanks in advance....

  10. It looks fantastic, Joanne! Very classic and cool. I hope this lasts him for years, especially considering all the work you put into it! Can 17-year-olds really appreciate the sewing we do for them, I wonder? I ask because I am thinking about making a Chanel jacket for Annie for Christmas.... She is wearing the preppy anorak I made for her quite a bit.
