After many alterations and the insertion of a waistband, I have a cute wool trench. She is very fitted. No layers under this. But I can wear it during the warmer seasons.
I block fused the entire piece of fabric. I have been converted to block fusing. No more straggly pieces that slide around the cutting table and iron up several inches short of the fabric piece.
I chose covered buttons for a clean look. I did not want any buttons to upstage the fabric. Please tell me if you have good luck with covered buttons or what brand you recommend. I broke several just trying to cover them, and then sewing them, each time the metal hook would break. They seem flimsy.
I did not line the coat, the block fusing really provided a sturdy fabric, but finished the seams with a hong kong seam finish. When the weather warms up I look forward to wearing this little number.
I am happy with this Black Swan, sometimes we can be such harsh critics of our own work.......anyone agree?
Such a chic coat! I love the fabric.
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful! I love the fabric and fullness of the skirt.
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous. Lovely shape and the fabric!
ReplyDeleteThat coat has a lovely shape. It looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteRe covered buttons, it is possible to get them made if you live near a garment district. I've done it in London, but not New York, and it was inexpensive and worth it.
A stunner! The fabric choice is perfect for this garment. Block fusing - sounds like something I should investigate. I'm with you - we are our worst critics - however, I learn a lot from trying to be perfect in sewing, so that's not a bad thing. Looks great on you!!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! You will feel - and look - amazing wearing it.
ReplyDeleteIt's elegant, and pretty and feminine. And your waist looks tiny in it. A definite keeper!
ReplyDeleteThat is too cute! Love the fabric.
ReplyDeleteThis turned into a stunning coat, you were right to let the fabric do the talking, it's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAmazing coat, Joanne! Yes, we do tend to be our own harshest critics, I know that I am guilty of it daily! Good luck with the buttons, I've never done a covered button.
ReplyDeleteThe black swan is amazing! I love, love, love the fabric choice!
ReplyDeleteThe waistband was the answer! I love it. I just watched BBC North and South, the fitted bodice reminds me of Margaret's coat. It looks wonderful. Love the large covered buttons. Always make more than you need...just in case!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like an evening coat. She would be beautiful over a LBD!
ReplyDeleteI agree wit the Gwen, she goes with a LBD and long gloves. This coat is drop dead gorgeous ! Well done !
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely coat! The pattern/fabric you chose is fantastic. Another great garment!
ReplyDeleteMy oh my but this swan is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful - well done to turn the project around! It's so hard to persevere when the initial version doesn't meet your expectations (accordingly I have lots of UFOs).

ReplyDeleteThe black Swan is fiercely drammatic and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm really late in commenting, but I LOVE the waistband you added. It gives it a long torso line that is very swan-like! Gorgeous!
